2.5 to 3.5 hours is the typical length of a Blue Lagoon visit. For most guests, this is the ideal amount of time and feels unhurried without becoming a full-day plan.

This gives you enough time to enjoy the geothermal water without feeling rushed, while still leaving room to explore the sauna, steam room, steam cave, colder lagoon, mask bar, and in-water bar at your own pace.

Here’s one way to spend your time:

Start with the main lagoon. Let the warmth settle into the body before moving on to other areas.

Then explore the sauna, steam room, steam cave, and colder lagoon as you wish. The colder lagoon is not an extreme cold plunge. It is cooler than the main geothermal water, offering a gentler contrast that feels refreshing without the shock of very cold immersion. Yes, a short visit to Blue Lagoon is possible. If you are stopping in on a layover or working around a tight itinerary, 1.5 to 2 hours is enough time to experience the geothermal water and leave feeling refreshed.

Blue Lagoon is just 15-20 minutes from Keflavík International Airport, making it one of the few world-class geothermal experiences you can fit between flights.

For a short visit, we recommend spending at least one hour in the water. That gives you time to settle in, feel the warmth of the geothermal seawater, and visit the mask bar for your included face mask.

It is a minimum, not a target. If your schedule is tight, it is enough to feel the difference. And of course, you are welcome to stay for less time if that suits your plans.

Can you visit Blue Lagoon on a layover?

Yes. Blue Lagoon is a popular stop for travelers arriving in or departing from Iceland. Its location near Keflavík International Airport makes it especially convenient before a flight, after landing, or between longer travel connections.

For a layover visit, allow time for transport, check-in, changing, showering, and returning to the airport. Should you spend 4 hours or more at Blue Lagoon?

Yes, if you want to experience Blue Lagoon without watching the clock. Some guests arrive with no particular plan and stay far longer than expected. The lagoon allows for that.

4+ hours is the ideal longer visit, giving you time to slow down properly. You can move between the lagoon, sauna, steam, colder lagoon, mask bar, in-water bar, and quiet zone without feeling like you need to choose one thing over another.

This is also the best option if you want to add a treatment or include a meal. Our in-water treatments, including massages and float therapy, extend the visit naturally. Instead of simply visiting the lagoon, you can build the day around it.

How long should you spend at Blue Lagoon if you want to eat?

If you plan to dine during your visit, allow extra time. Blue Café is ideal for lighter bites and a more casual pause. Lava Restaurant offers a fuller dining experience, with local Icelandic ingredients and views shaped by the surrounding lava landscape.

Many guests plan their visit around a table at Lava, which we recommend booking in advance. Guests are also free to dine in their robes until 15:00, moving comfortably between the water and the restaurant.

If you want to bathe, enjoy the facilities, and sit down for a proper meal, allow at least 4 to 5 hours.

Can you stay overnight at Blue Lagoon?

If you want to remove time from the equation entirely, staying overnight is the best way to experience Blue Lagoon slowly. Silica Hotel and the Retreat Hotel are located within the Blue Lagoon area, allowing the destination to become part of a longer stay.

An overnight stay gives you the rarest version of Blue Lagoon: one without a schedule pressing against it.
