The whole of the Reykjanes Peninsula in Iceland is a seismically active area. The Reykjanes Peninsula is home to Keflavík Airport and Blue Lagoon, as well as several communities and companies.

For the past three years, we have had several volcanic eruptions and seen a number of earthquakes. In November 2023, earthquake magnitude and frequency increased significantly. Since then, there have been four volcanic eruptions in the area.

We recently completed construction of a temporary gravel road segment near the turnoff to Blue Lagoon from Grindavíkurvegur road. This section will be paved in the future. Guests can access our site via this new road.

Directions: Drive down the main highway, Reykjanesbraut (road no. 41), and make a turn onto Grindavíkurvegur (road no. 43). Next, take a turn at the Blue Lagoon sign onto Norðurljósavegur (road no. 426), which will guide you directly to our location.

Please note that stopping on this new segment is not allowed for safety reasons and to ensure a smooth flow of traffic.

A network of gas meters at and around Blue Lagoon are actively monitored. If data suggests that a response is necessary, a team of trained members of staff carry out evacuation plans or implement precautionary measures. Always follow the directions of staff.

The Icelandic Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management oversees risk assessments. For recognized risks, mitigation measures are implemented, and response plans are developed for high-risk scenarios. These plans are operationalized across three phases: the uncertainty phase, the alert phase, and the emergency/distress phase.
