Blue Lagoon and Hreyfing fitness to open new health club and spa in Reykjavík
Blue Lagoon and Hreyfing, fitness, will open a joint fitness and Blue Lagoon spa in new building in Glæsibær, Reykjavík, at the end of this year. The new centre will be the first of its kind. Until now spa treatments based on the unique active Blue Lagoon ingredients have only been available at the Blue Lagoon itself. Opening of other Blue Lagoon city spas is a part of the Blue Lagoon’s future plans. London is one of the cities Blue Lagoon is looking at in the near future.
Various new features and treatments that have not been available in Iceland before will be available at the new centre. These include: float-tank relaxation, 50 minutes of which is considered as the equivalent of 8 hours’ sleep, and refreshing spa treatments using Blue Lagoon skin care products. The Blue Lagoon’s healing effects and positive effects on skin are well known. Recent studies have shown that Blue Lagoon silica and algae diminish the signs of aging.
The number of guests at the new centre will be limited. Its size will occupy more than 3,300 m2, twice the size of Hreyfing’s current premises in Faxafen. The architectural firm Teiknistofan á Óðinstorgi designed the building. VA architects were in charge of the interior design. VA arkitects have designed all Blue Lagoon facilities. The design of the spa ara creates a strong connection to the Blue Lagoon’s natural environment. The building is to be made over to Hreyfing on 1 December, and Hreyfing and Blue Lagoon Spa will begin operations there at the end of the year.
“Developing a new health resort from scratch is a very exciting challenge,” says Ágústa Johnson, Managing Director of Hreyfing. “It has been invaluable to be able to draw on the decades of experience we have gained of running spa and health centres. Bringing Hreyfing and Blue Lagoon Spa together opens up new opportunities. This allows us to offer a variety of facilities in a beautiful setting and for guests to relax and rejuvenate body and soul.”
Facilities at the centre will include refreshment areas with a range of health snacks and dishes. Hot pots and saunas will be located in a sheltered area out of doors and the proximity of Laugardalur will offer further opportunities for outdoor fitness and relaxation.
Anna G. Sverrisdóttir, managing director of Blue Lagoon’s domestic operations and Hreyfing’s chairman of the board, says the opening of the centre in Reykjavík will be a welcome and important step. “We are planning to open Blue Lagoon spas in other cites,” she says. “ Opening the first Blue Lagoon spa in Reykjavík is a very important step for us.”
The Hreyfing fitness centre was founded in 1998 and is a subsidiary of Blue Lagoon. Ágústa Johnson, managing director of Hreyfing, has more that 20 years’ experience of running fitness centres.
