Winter at the Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon is just as wonderful during winter as it is in summer. With fewer daily visitors during this season the atmosphere is calmer and more relaxed.

In Iceland during winter the temperature may drop just below freezing. The Blue Lagoon however stays just as warm as usual, around 37-39°C / 98-102°F, no matter the season or the weather, so it is never too cold to bathe in the Blue Lagoon. The contrast between hot and cold is a fantastic experience and one of the reasons bathing is so popular among Icelanders all year around. More about the Icelandic climate can be found at the Icelandic Met Office.

The warm geothermal seawater and the cold winter air create vapor that surrounds the lagoon, enhancing it's mystique and beauty. Finding a secluded spot in the warm water, surrounded by steam and pure nature, is a treat for the senses and relaxes body and mind. The active ingredients of the Blue Lagoon exert their power on the skin making you feel refreshed and rejuvenated. No wonder the winter season is the preferred time for many to visit the Blue Lagoon.

In-water treatments are offered all year around and it is ideal to book a massage or other treatment to complete your spa experience. Massages take place on a foam raft in the lagoon and special blankets are used to keep guests warm, no matter the season.

During the darkest months in Iceland the sun rises at around 11 in the morning and sets again around 4 in the afternoon. The natural light in the Blue Lagoon is particularly beautiful during sunset and sunrise, with a yellow or golden hue and sometimes even pink.

"Every time we come here we ask ourselves why we don't come here more often. The Blue Lagoon is a great place to visit and even more so in wintertime when it's dark."
- Kristín & Guđmundur

Later in the afternoon and in the evening, when the sky is clear, you can relax under a starry sky and experience a very romantic atmosphere. If you are very lucky you might even catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights. It is ideal to end your stay with dinner at LAVA restaurant with a view over the lagoon.

The Blue Lagoon is open all days of the week from 10:00 in the morning to 20:00 in the evening, from 1. September to 31. May. More about opening hours.

The Blue Lagoon is open every day during the holiday season, see Christmas opening hours.

"I was happier during my December visit when there was only 5hrs of sunlight (and 2hr long sunsets!) :)"
- Blackwithane

"I loved the fact that I could swim and soak and feel perfectly pampered even though the outside air was close to 45°F."
