About the natural psoriasis treatment
The Clinic's dermatologists and nurses regularly examine treatment guests and evaluate the results. Nurses provide daily care and guidance and monitor the process. The treatment day begins with a refreshing shower and use of Blue Lagoon algae and mineral shower gel. Guests then bathe in the 38-41°C geothermal seawater in a lagoon reserved exclusively for treatment guests. Guests are advised to bathe for 60 minutes to allow the skin to get warm, increase blood circulation to the skin and make it more receptive to the geothermal seawater's active ingredients. It is recommended that guests who enter an intensive full treatment program bathe twice a day for one hour at a time. Outpatient guests bathe daily for one hour.
Blue Lagoon silica mud holds an important role in the treatment. It deep-cleanses the skin, exfoliates, stimulates blood circulation, and adds to general well being.
After bathing guests shower, dry the skin and apply Blue Lagoon mineral moisturizing cream and intensive cream, both based on a unique blend of minerals (learn more about Blue Lagoon psoriasis treatment products).
UVB light therapy using modern light equipments is offered. Special lights for hand and feet are available and a light comb, which is a convenient option for people with scalp psoriasis. Most treatment guests use light therapy simultaneous with the Blue Lagoon treatment.
To maximize treatment results it is recommended that treatment guests lead a healthy lifestyle: drink plenty of water, exercise regularly, eat recommended daily servings of fruit and vegetables, and minimize alcohol intake and smoking.
One of the benefits of Blue Lagoon treatment compared to climatotherapy is that it does not require long stay outdoors and exposure to sunlight, decreasing the likelihood of skin cancer and untimely aging of the skin. The Blue Lagoon's natural treatment of psoriasis involves a combination of bathing in the Blue Lagoon and UVA /UVB light therapy. Iceland's climate, fresh air, healthy food and relaxing atmosphere are also integral parts of the treatment. A three to four week therapy is highly recommended but patients are welcome to stay for longer or shorter periods. The first sign of healing is the disappearance of scales on the skin. This normally occurs within one week of treatment. The process normally takes 21-28 days.
Psoriasis and the family
Psoriasis not only affects the patient but also the people closest to him or her. It is easier for individuals with psoriasis to handle the disease when they receive support from friends and family. Family-friendly environment is a key factor in treatment.
Patients from different corners of the world
The popularity of the Blue lagoon natural psoriasis treatment has increased significantly in recent years. The number of treatments provided has risen from 2000 in 1994 to 6000 treatments in 2005. While popular among Icelanders, the Blue Lagoon treatment also attracts psoriasis patients from different corners of the world. Our guests represent 18 countries ranging from our neighbours in Northern Europe to an exotic country such as Thailand.
Officially recognized clinic in three countries
In addition to being recoginzed by Icelandic Health Authorities, the treatment is also recognized in Denmark and in the Faroe Islands. Thirteen of the sixteen Danish amts offer the Blue Lagoon natural psoriasis treatment as a treatment option.
Blue Lagoon and SPOEX
Blue Lagoon works in close cooperation with SPOEX, the Official Organisations of Psoriasis and Eczema Patients in Iceland.
SPOEX is a charity organisation, established in 1972, operating an office and an out-patient-clinic for people with dermatological diseases. The organization's main role is primarily to protect patients' rights and provide more quality in life through education and general knowledge of the disease.
The cooperation between Blue Lagoon and SPOEX is important to both parties. In 2005, Grímur Sæmundsen and Valgerður Audunsdóttir, president of SPOEX, signed an agreement confirming the cooperation between the two parties. As a part of the agreement Blue Lagoon will sponsor parts of Audunsdóttur's domestic and international travels. Click here to enter SPOEX's homepage.
